Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, Book 4)

Amazon.com Review

Great love stories thrive on sacrifice. Throughout The Twilight Saga (Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse), Stephenie Meyer has emulated great love stories--Romeo and Juliet, Wuthering Heights--with the fated, yet perpetually doomed love of Bella (the human girl) and Edward (the vampire who feeds on animals instead of humans). In Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final installment in the series, Bella’s story plays out in some unexpected ways. The ongoing conflicts that made this series so compelling--a human girl in love with a vampire, a werewolf in love with a human girl, the generations-long feud between werewolves and vampires--resolve pretty quickly, apparently so that Meyer could focus on Bella’s latest opportunity for self-sacrifice: giving her life for someone she loves even more than Edward. How close she comes to actually making that sacrifice is questionable, which is a big shift from the earlier books. Even though you knew Bella would make it through somehow, the threats to her life, and to her relationship with Edward, had previously always felt real. It’s as if Meyer was afraid of hurting her characters too much, which is unfortunate, because the pain Bella suffered at losing Edward in New Moon, and the pain Jacob suffered at losing Bella again and again, are the fire and the heart that drive the whole series. Diehard fans will stick with Bella, Edward, and Jacob for as many twists and turns as possible, but after most of the characters get what they want with little sacrifice, some readers may have a harder time caring what happens next. 3 stars Lackluster Finish to a Great Series 2010-01-05

Reviewer: A. Nandy

If you only read one book in the Twilight series, this should NOT be it.

This book was written for Twilight fans looking for closure after the first three books. By itself, it does not stand as a great novel for fans of fantasy adventure. Those who have read other books in this series know that the plot tends to revolve around a conflict that results in fast action, fight scenes, and tough decisions. This book is heavier on the relationships of the main characters and the love triangle that began in the second novel.

So, if it's not a great adventure, then why isn't it a great relationship story? It is difficult to say without giving away details of the plot. But for those of us who were waiting to see how things finally worked out for Bella, Edward, and Jacob, let's just say, it was all too easy. The author chose to provide easy solutions to the problems they have been facing without exploring the contradictions and conflicts that have been in place throughout the series. This 'easy way out' is a disappointment as it provides no reading enjoyment and only quick closure to the story.

5 stars Great end to the series! 2010-01-05

Few minor things I was slightly unhappy with, but not enough to lower my rating of it!

i am sad to see the series end.. but this book was easy to read and spellbounding.. it was easy to go with the emtional flow of the charaters.. i was scared... happy.. in shock and on the edge of my seat the entie book... great

2 stars Should have been better (Spoilers) 2010-01-05

First off, the only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 is that I am clearly not the intended reader. The twilight series isn't written with men in mind. If I were a teenage girl I probably would love these books.
I was extremely disappointed by the end of this series. It spends a good chunk of the book gearing you up for a fight that never happens. A lot of time was spent explaining all the different abilities different vampires have, just so the big battle could be canceled at the end. It feels like a huge waste of time.

4 stars Loved it. 2010-01-04

I raced through all four books during my holiday week off, and I really enjoyed the finale. While the idea of Jacob imprinting on Renesmee seems a little lame, i ended up suspending disbelief--after all, i had just committed to a series of books about teenage vampire love--and loved it.
