Going Rogue: An American Life

Product Description

On September 3, 2008 Alaska Governor Sarah Palin gave a speech at the Republican National Convention that electrified the nation and instantly made her one of the most recognizable women in the world. As chief executive of America′s largest state, she had built a record as a reformer who cast aside politics-as-usual and pushed through changes other politicians only talked about: Energy independence. Ethics reform. And the biggest private sector infrastructure project in U.S. history. While revitalizing public school funding and ensuring the state met its responsibilities to seniors and Alaska Native populations, Palin also beat the political "good ol′ boys club" at their own game and brought Big Oil to heel. Like her GOP running mate, John McCain, Palin wasn′t a packaged and over-produced "candidate." She was a Main Street American woman: a working mom, wife of a blue collar union man, and mother of five children, the eldest of whom was serving his country in a yearlong deployment in Iraq and the youngest, an infant with special needs. Palin′s hometown story touched a populist nerve, rallying hundreds of thousands of ordinary Americans to the GOP ticket. But as the campaign unfolded, Palin became a lightning rod for both praise and criticism. Supporters called her "refreshing," "honest," a kitchen-table public servant they felt would fight for their interests. Opponents derided her as a wide-eyed Pollyanna unprepared for national leadership. But none of them knew the real Sarah Palin. In this eagerly anticipated memoir, Palin paints an intimate portrait of growing up in the wilds of Alaska; meeting her lifelong love; her decision to enter politics; the importance of faith and family; and the unique joys and trials of life as a high-profile working mother. She also opens up for the first time about the 2008 presidential race, providing a rare, mom′s-eye view of high-stakes national politics - from patriots dedicated to "Country First" to slick politicos bent on winning at any cost. Going Rogue traces one ordinary citizen′s extraordinary journey, and imparts Palin′s vision of a way forward for America and her unfailing hope in the greatest nation on earth.

1 stars Shallow, myopic, egotistical 2010-01-05

Reviewer: Michelle J. Foster

This is a glossy light PR read for those easily satisfied by shallow proclamations. Palin's worldview is unshaped by facts, naively underestimates the realities of the economic giants of the Far East, and fails to realize that other national models are more effective in bringing about constructive change than ours. If you are satisfied with Jingoism and happy platitudes, read on. If you seek solutions, read elsewhere.

I love this book. This is the real Sarah Palin that the main stream media doesn't want the public to know. She is successful, honest and direct. This book is well-written and discusses all different aspects of her life. AWESOME!!

5 stars surprised it's a conservative manifesto 2010-01-04

thought Rogue would be about the private travails of Sarah Palin. was pleasantly surprised when I discovered it's about why Americans become conservative. was open minded but now am a Sarah Palin fan to the dismay of my Liberal Socialist Democrat acquaintances, because of evil immoral Socialism a Liberal will NEVER be your friend, it's philosophically impossible with Liberal Socialism.

5 stars A talk with Sarah Palin 2010-01-04

Reviewer: Thomas M. Magee

This book is excellent. It feels after reading it like you sat down and had a talk with Sarah about her experience. The style is very down home and easy to read. I think most will really enjoy this book.

If you read this book you will find the true Sarah Palin, not the one manufactured by the campaign nor the one frothing liberals love to talk about. Over half of the book is about who she really is, her upbringing, significant experiences, values and such. You see things that don't come out in other sources or what was mentioned in the campaign. Through that story you will see Sarah in a new light.

I found Sarah very inspiring for many different reasons. One big thing is how you see Sarah is ordinary. Nowadays the political elite, from both parties seem like they live in a different world. They all have Ivory educations, didn't work a day in the their life, and have millions and millions in coffers to ensure they stay the political elite.

Sarah is different than all of that. She has kids, struggles to pay bills, and is involved in her kids schools like millions of others across the country. Here was a concerned citizen who stood up and got involved instead of just talking about things. Her idealism and personality propelled her up the chain. Her campaigns were all grass roots and run on shoe string budgets. Sarah went for what is right in AK, not what got her ahead. People forget while Governor she went after her own party and the big bad oil companies. This is from a Republican?

Sarah's description of her VP campaign time was very enlightening. She doesn't preach to much, just relates this story or that story. Through that you get a very clear picture of the campaign. You can see exactly why McCain lost. His people weren't about ideas but were about some abstract formula only they understood. You can understand why the Republicans are in such bad shape through that. From the book I think half of McCain's staff were working there because they couldn't get a Democrat staff job. Sarah's popularity comes entirely from her motivation from the ideas, not from consultant packages. The fact that Sarah was able to operate at the national level should inspire us all. Ideas and common people still matter.

The last part of the book is full of Sarah's description of life after the campaign. You can see what is wrong with the country through that. Sarah talks about the harassment from the liberals of the country. They all were enraged over the fact that a conservative commoner might challenge them. They flooded her and the AK government with every kind of tactic you could think of in order to grind her down. It is no wonder we get who we get for national leadership when you learn about these conditions.

I do think most will love the book. It really gives you a good insight to the woman and events around Sarah Palin.
